I loved the book Huckleberry Finn when I was little. Loved the TV series too. A friend on facebook posted that there are plans to remove 'racist' remarks from said book.
Briefly, just in case you haven't read the book, there is a character called Jim in it who is a runaway slave. He is referred to by the word Nigger. Repeatedly in fact. And, if I remember correctly (I'm going to run upstairs and check) Injuns are Native Americans.
I think to remove these words is so very, very wrong. The book is a classic. An American classic at that. Jesus, the country is so messed up it's not even funny. They're going to whitewash (pun intended) this great book and I think that's a terrible thing.
The book was written by Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) as a view/narration (you can tell I'll never make a writer as struggling to tell you what I'm trying to say. Or something.) I know, it was written as a representation of attitudes that existed in pre-civil war south america. When you read the book you understand that it was a certain period of history. I understand from other people that when read in context the book takes the piss out of the racist attitudes of the white people. I honestly hope that Huckleberrry Finn DOES NOT represent the 21st century feelings towards native americans or black people or african-americans.
I like to imagine that Mr. Twain is spinning in his grave at these idiots, these pencil pushers trying to edit his masterpiece.
Okay, soapbox packed up now and put away. For another day at least. xxx
I agree 100%.
ReplyDeleteHi Jackie, isn't it unbelievable? All art is art and represents the time of it's making and therefore should be viewed or, in this instance, read bearing in mind when it was created. Drives me insane. They did it with fairy tales. The sodding gingerbread man no longer gets eaten and humpty dumpty gets put back together?? The gingerbread man was a cocky bugger therefore he should have been eaten and as for poor old Humpty, well he was a cannon. A big one. And he fell off a castle wall. Nothing to do with an actual egg at all. Rhymes were how people spread news in the good old days. Sorry, I rant. i don't like things being changed for stupid reaons. Off soapbox again and thanks for dropping by ; )
